Artist Rant: Why Lie To A Paying Customer?

Ok so a lot of us get commissions done by our favorite artists when we go to conventions. For me it's the best part because I love original art. Now sometimes artists will advertise that they are taking commissions just as side work, and that's what happened here. Now I'm not going to mention the artists name in the article so if you were hoping I would call him out by name then you can stop reading because I'm not going to do that.

Anyway this particular artist had advertised on Twitter back in November 2016 that he had some commission slots open if anyone was interested in getting something done. And I'm a big fan of his work and have actually met him several times and have had two previous pieces commissioned at conventions and they turned out great, so when I had the opportunity to get another I jumped on it. This was on November 2nd 2016. We exchanged a few emails, I let him know what I wanted, we agreed on a price and I sent $110 by PayPal that day.
Now I have to admit I had never gotten a commission before that wasn't at a convention. So I don't really have a standard to go by as far as how long it would take to get it from the artist. I figured a month or two. I was wrong.

So three months goes by and he sends me an email on February 3rd 2017 saying the commission will be shipped out that week, my response was brief, I just said thanks for the update and that I was looking forward to receiving it. But then another 6 weeks went by and I hadn't received it, so I emailed him on March 18th and asked if the commission was ever shipped because I hadnt received it yet.  His response was, sorry for the delay, he said it missed the mail before he moved. Now I'm not really sure what him moving has to do with him shipping out a piece of artwork that I paid for back in November. And he said it would go out in a week or two. I'm not sure why it would take that long to ship but I said ok, and said again that I was looking forward to getting the piece.

Now almost another month has gone by and still nothing so at this point I'm getting aggravated. I sent another email last Thursday on April 13th, and asked if he had any idea when I would get the commission because he's told me several times that it would be shipped. And his response actually blew my mind. He said "thanks for the heads up, I'll draw it first thing in the morning". So after all that he never even drew the commission. Even after telling me in February and March that it was ready to ship. He just flat out lied.

I'm not the type of person to argue over the Internet so I simply said ok. But if I see him at a convention again I will let him know that he lost a fan and that's not the way to treat people. I paid him emmediatly on November 2nd, he told me several times it was going to be shipped out, then come to find out its April and it hasn't been drawn yet. And I'm writing this article on April 17th 2017 and I don't have the commission as of yet. So I will update you guys if I ever receive this.

It's not so much the turn around time that I'm frustrated with but the fact that he lied about sending it. I get that thing happen and maybe he just had too much work and not enough time but if that was the case then shoot me an email and let me know that there will be delay and I would have been fine with  that. Don't say you're sending it and make me wait months for something you havent even done yet.

That's just not cool and no way to do business. He won't be getting anymore business from me and I won't support any of his work.

Let me know if you guys have ever had any bad artist experiences.
