Comiconn 2018 review

I went to Comiconn last weekend at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.  I had fun at the show.  We didn't set up this year so I was just there as an attendee.  I think I made the right choice this year, even though last year was good for selling books  This year there were far less dealers.

The venue itself is great, its a casino so you cant really complain.  I played some tables after I was done with the con and had a pretty good time.

The show had its issues though.  I didn't have a dealer pass this year so I bought my ticket ahead of time online.  I went on Saturday only.  The way they let you in was kind of weird.  Whether you bought a ticket in advance or not you had to wait in the same line.  You then had to make your way to the Foxwoods box office to hand in your printed ticket for another ticket.  You then had to go onto another line where you exchanged that ticket for a wristband.  I think they could have done a better job with that.  If you bough a ticket in advance you should have been able to go straight into the line for the wristbands.  It was a slow process.  It probably took about an hour for me to get into the show.

The didn't have many comic dealers at the show.  Maybe 6 guys selling books.  So if you went to the show to buy comics you were probably disappointed.  I did get to hang out with some friends of mine, a couple of which did set up at the show, so that's always fun.

I didn't buy much at the show.  I got a few pre code horror books for my collection but that was pretty much it.

The guest list wasn't bad, I don't think it was as good as last year but it was ok.  Pretty much all the comic artists there I had met before.  The highlight of the show for me was meeting Julie Benz.  She played Darla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  She was also in Defiance, which I thought was a great show.  She was wicked nice and even more gorgeous in person than she is on tv.  I am a huge Buffy fan so anytime I get to meet someone from the cast it's awesome for me.

Overall the show was alright.  It was a 2 hour drive for me to get there and I probably only spent about 2 hours inside the con.  I did have fun and enjoyed being at the casino.  I'm not sure if I would go back next year or not.  If you are thinking of going to the show and your main focus is to buy comics, I really wouldn't recommend it.  And its a pretty small show so I don't think anyone really needs to go both days.

Overall I'd give the show a 7/10, mainly because of Julie Benz, if she wasn't there I would have probably given it a 5/10.  If you live close and want to check it out for the day then go for it.  If you are looking to score a lot of comics then don't waste your time.  But it was fun so you can go just to hang out.  Not a great buying show but still enjoyable.

Did you guys attend this years Comiconn?  If so let me know what you thought about it.
