Gotham Academy #1 review.
So for the first time in a while I picked up some new comic books on a Wednesday. I haven't been buying new issues lately because nothing has really interested me, until today.
So I picked up a few things but the book I wanted to talk about is Gotham Academy. The initial reason that I picked this book up is because it's written by Becky Cloonan and I'm a big fan of her work. She's probably more known for her art but I was excited to see what she would come up with. She did do a variant cover for issue 1, but unfortunate my shop didn't have it so I'll have to pick that up at some point.
But let's talk about the book. So not a lot happens in this issue but it's the first issue so that's understandable. We are introduced to a few characters. One student, Olive seems like she will be the main character in the series. Bruce Wayne does make an appearance in the book.
As for what the book is about, Gotham Academy is a school in Gotham, I'm assuming these characters are high school students but I'm not positive. So of course with kids they will get into some trouble, and there is a rumor at the academy that the place is haunted. So they have to go listen to Bruce Wayne give a speech at the school, but instead of going to the speech Olive and her friend Maps go investigate around the school. They make it up to the roof and Maps actually falls over the edge and is hanging onto a gargoyle, so Olive has to swing down all Batman style and save her. And to their dismay everyone at the speech can see them through the window. So they make it down safely and are ok. Bruce Wayne seems to know who Olive is and checks to make sure she's ok.
So that's pretty much what happens in the first issue. It was a really fun read. The writing was great and I really liked the art as well. It's always nice when a book has a great story accompanied by great art. I'm definitely interested to see where the series is headed and I want to see how the characters will develope and what part Bruce Wayne will play in the rest of the series, if any. I wonder if we will see any recognizable teen heroes join the academy.
So I would say have to give Gotham Academy issue 1 a 9/10. I really enjoyed the story and I'm actually excited to pick up the next issue.
You guys should go out to your local comic shops and pick up a copy of Gotham Academy, you won't be disappointed!
