Comic book collecting...
Hey everyone, so it's been about four or five weeks now since the last time I picked up any new comics on a Wednesday. For those of you who don't know, Wednesday is when the new issues for the week come out. But anyway, I just don't really feel like spending money on new books that don't have the best stories or the best art. I would much rather spend money on key issues and back issues that I need for my collection.
So here are some tips for a new collector, and these tips are just my opinion. So if you're just getting into comic collecting I wouldn't really recommend buying new issues. They may be cheaper to buy but as far as collecting factor goes, it isn't really there.
I think a lot of people have the misconception that every new book that comes out will be the next Walking Dead and the books will be worth a fortune. Walking Dead was one in a million and that will probably never happen with a modern book again. Sure some books like Saga 1, Manifest Destiny 1 and some new 52 issues like Batman 1, have gone up in price, but nothing like Walking Dead has and who knows if that will last.
So personally I wouldn't invest a lot of money in new books if you are just starting a collection. Obviously if you can afford to collect golden age comics I'd suggest you do so, but the vast majority of people cannot.
So I would suggest picking a few of your favorite books and start picking up some silver age comics of that character.
For example, if your favorite character is Batman, pick up soke silver age Batman and Detective Comics issues. You can get a lot of silver age issues that aren't keys relatively cheap and they are only getting more scarce and only go up in value.
If you can get key issues, and what I mean when I say "key" is there is something special about that issue, like a first appearance of a character, or an origin of a character, or something that makes that issue special, if you can get those issues for a good price I'd start slowly picking them up.
A lot of bronze age issues have been going up in price over the last couple years, especially cosmic Marvel issues, so if you can find those cheap I'd grab them as well.
For someone who is just starting out and wants to know the value of comics I would suggest picking up an Overstreet Price Guide, the 44th edition was just released last month. Now it's called a "guide" for a reason, it's a guideline for what books are worth, it's not 100% accurate for every issue. It doesn't always account for things like TV and movie speculation, and what book is hot at the moment. Also it's only produced once a year so it doesn't always have the most up-to-date prices. But for the most part it's a pretty good reference.
So this will end my collecting tips for now, I'll post more in the future, if you guys have any question feel free to ask!
Thanks for reading!
